Ej. Bormann et al., Selection of capsule deficient strains of Methylobacterium rhodesianum producing polyhydroxybutyrate, BIOTECH TEC, 13(8), 1999, pp. 539-544
Methylobacterium rhodesianum was cultivated using an extended fed-batch reg
ime. After treatments with N-nitroso-methyl-urea or X-rays, colonies showin
g an irregular morphology or increased heavy-metal sensitivity were selecte
d. Electron micrographs of cells of isolated strains demonstrated the loss
of the glycocalyx. Selectants and the parental strain yielded identical PHB
amounts.
