Adsorption isotherms of n-butylamine on silica gel modified by hexadec
yl groups and on polystyrene sorbents are described by the Langmuir eq
uations. Polystyrene is characterized by a higher adsorption capacity
and a higher distribution coefficient. The breakthrough volumes of n-b
utylamine (1 x 10(-3) M in water) are 100 and 175 mL, for polystyrene
and hexadecyl-modified silica gel (silica C16), respectively. Quantita
tive desorption of alkylamines from the studied sorbents is attained b
y passing 2 mL of an ethanol-hydrochloric acid mixture. A procedure is
proposed for the adsorption preconcentration of alkylamines from aque
ous solutions followed by their chromatographic determination.
