Abstract
Pneumococcal pneumonia remains an important cause of considerable morb idity and mortality worldwide. Although there have recently been signi ficant advances in the understanding of pathogenic mechanisms, many cu rrent studies focus on the association with concomitant HIV infection and the burgeoning problem of antibiotic resistance.
