Abstract
Attention was drawn to the protean manifestations of severe leptospiro
sis by an outbreak of cases with severe pulmonary hemorrhage in Nicara
gua. The difficulties of diagnosis were illustrated both by the fact t
hat the Nicaragua cases were initially thought to be dengue, and by th
e many studies attempting to improve diagnosis.
