Abstract
Objective: To evaluate whether hysteroscopy is useful in the work-up of wom en with infertility. Methods: We reviewed all 235 hysteroscopies performed for the diagnosis ste rility or infertility between 1993 and January 1998. The mean age of the pa tients was 31.7 years (range 19 - 49). Results: Of the 235 procedures 187 (80 %) were purely diagnostic and 48 (20 %) were operative. Abnormalities (44 polyps, 17 uterine malformations, 12 tubal occlusions, 8 leiomyomas, 8 interauterine adhesions, 3 cervical steno ses, 1 other) were found in 47% of patients. Three uterine perforations occ urred during dilatation of the cervical canal; there were no other complica tions. Conclusion: These data and the ease of the procedure indicate that hysteros copy is useful in the evaluation of women with infertility.
