Abstract
Intractable bilateral exudative pleural effusions developed, following syst emic sepsis without pulmonary infection, in a beta-thalassemia intermedia p atient with longstanding mediastinal hematopoietic masses. The pleura were not infiltrated by hematopoietic cells. Bilateral talc pleurodesis successf ully controlled the effusions.
