Abstract
Born on a chicken farm on the outskirts of Knoxville, Tennessee, William Ha stie rose to become the first black federal district court judge and to exe rt a lasting influence an a generation of lawyers and judges including Supr eme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall. JBHE has asked his daughter Karen Hast ie Williams of the Washington law firm Crowell & Moring, to give us an acco unt of Judge Hastie's college years.
