William Hastie: Facing challenges in the ivory tower

Born on a chicken farm on the outskirts of Knoxville, Tennessee, William Ha stie rose to become the first black federal district court judge and to exe rt a lasting influence an a generation of lawyers and judges including Supr eme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall.
