NEUES JAHRBUCH FUR GEOLOGIE UND PALAONTOLOGIE-ABHANDLUNGEN
New finds of Alces latifrons (JOHNSON 1874) from the gravel pits of the nor
thern Upper Rhine Valley (Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate) are described, dated
as Eemian by SCHWEISS (1988) and KOENIGSWALD (1988). The new material indi
cates an extension of the stratigraphic range of Alces latifrons into the l
ast interglacial period. Alces latifrons from the Upper Rhine Valley reache
s the size of Alces latifrons from early Middle Pleistocene localities. Bas
ed on size and morphology they can clearly be distinguished from Alces alce
s from stratigraphically younger sediments of the Upper Rhine Valley. In ad
dition taxonomic problems with fossil moose are debated in the context of f
unctional adaptations and intraspecific variability of the recent Alces alc
es.
