Abstract
Persistent spectral hole burning has been observed successfully at room tem perature in the excitation spectrum for the F-7(0) - D-5(0) transition of S m2+ in silica-based fibers co-doped with Al. The room-temperature persisten t spectral hole burning is reported for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, in Sm2+-doped fiber. The hole width was measured to be about 6 c m(-1). The ratio of inhomogeneous to homogeneous linewidths of this system is similar to 15. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All cm rights reserved.
