Direct adiabatic temperature change as well as magnetic measurements were c
arried out on two different samples of Gd5Si2Ge2 composition for which calc
ulations predicted a "giant" magnetocaloric effect (MCE). While magnetic me
asurements well reproduce published values, serving the basis for the predi
ctions, direct adiabatic temperature change measurements show a significant
ly smaller MCE. The discrepancy can be interpreted on the basis of the ther
modynamics of first order magnetic transitions.
