Carbon/carbon composites (CCC) are a unique class of high performance mater
ials. Since their inception, about 1960, over 100 different types of CCCs h
ave been created with properties previously not available. Novel materials
were designed, fabricated tested upgraded, and used in selected prototype a
pplications. Componentry benefits were demonstrated and later the materials
were used in operational systems. This review focuses on the applied uses
of CCC materials in the fields of friction, aerospace, propulsion, power ge
neration, thermal management, industry, and medicine.
