Abstract
The nitridation process of MJ12 (Ti-47Al-2Nb-2Cr) and MJ47 (Ti-47Al-2Nb-2Mn + 0.8TiB(2)) in an atmosphere of purified ammonia has been investigated ov er the temperature range 1000-1200 K, The nitrided alloys showed improvemen t of hardness and wear resistance in this environment. At 1200 K nitridatio n, Knoop hardness values of MJ12 and MJ47 were 1283.6 and 1391.3 kg mm(-2), respectively, and the decrease in wear rate of both alloys was as much as 99%, By using x-ray diffraction, TiN was detected on the surface of the all oys nitrided greater than or equal to 1100 K, Copyright (C) 1999 John Whey & Sons, Ltd.
