A five-year-old mongrel dog showed signs of decreased exercise tolerance, a
n enlarged abdomen and coughing. The animal had been imported from Dong Kon
g. The diagnosis of dirofilariasis was based on blood examination, electroc
ardiography, radiography and echography. The adult worms and microfilaria d
isappeared after treatment with thiacetarsamide en ivermectin, but the dog
kept developing ascites due to chronic heart failure. The patient was final
ly euthanized.
