A review of some basic results of the studies of reflection, scattering, an
d radiation of sound by plates and shells in water is presented. These are
studies performed by the author in the 1950s and 1960s at the Acoustical La
boratory of the Lebedev Physical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of th
e USSR and, later, at the Acoustics Institute of the Academy of Sciences of
the USSR. The physical nature of the effects of nonspecular reflection, re
sonance scattering and radiation of sound and their fundamental interrelati
on following from the reciprocity theorem formulated by the author during t
hese years are discussed. The paper is written in connection with the 275th
Anniversary of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
