Abstract
The possibilities and limitations of residual stress analysis using diffrac tion methods are discussed. Examples for the analysis of stress gradients i n the near surface zone are given. The use of neutron diffraction and of hi gh energy synchrotron radiation for the analysis of bulk stresses is demons trated. Future trends of experimental residual stress analysis are outlined .
