4-O-Methylglucuronoxylan from beechwood meal and the water-insoluble a
rabino-(4-O-methylglucurono)xylan from corn cobs have been modified in
aqueous alkaline medium with 3-chloro-2-hydroxy-propyltrimethylammoni
um chloride. The resulting TMAHP-xylans represent amphoteric derivativ
es which differ in the proportion oi TMAHP- and carboxyl groups. The d
erivatives were characterized and tested as papermaking additives by V
arious laboratory methods. In these tests, the lower substituted beech
wood xylan derivative shows properties of retention and strength impro
ving aids.
