Purpose: This retrospective investigation reviewed the ultrasound imag
es of 96 benign soft-tissue tumours of the hand and forearm. The aim o
f the investigation was to determine whether there was any correlation
between the ultrasound picture and the histopathological diagnosis. M
aterial and Methods: Five common types of benign tumour in the hand an
d forearm were studied: localized villonodular synovites, haemangiomas
, lipomas, nerve tumours, and glomus tumours. Only rumours that had be
en operated on and sent for histopathological examination were investi
gated. Results and Conclusion: The study found 5 key ultrasound charac
teristics that were important for differentiating the tumours: existen
ce or not of vessels, existence or not of a capsule, echogenicity, ech
o structure, and pattern of growth. Taking these traits into considera
tion should make it easier for the examiner to make the right diagnosi
s with a reasonable degree of accuracy.
