Trivalent rare earth cations (Lu3+ and Eu3+) were electrochemically doped i
nto Al-2(WO4)(3) single-crystal grain bulk and single-crystal solid solutio
ns of Al-2(WO4)(3)-Ln(2)(WO4)(3) (Ln = Lu, Eu) were successfully prepared.
The ionic conductivity was increased by Lu or Eu doping into the single cry
stal by forming a solid solution. The outstanding feature of the present el
ectrolysis procedure is that new types of solid solution single crystal wer
e artificially prepared, whose solution solid cannot be obtained by a conve
ntional polycrystalline solid solution preparation method due to the large
ionic radius difference in the two trivalent ion species. (C) 1999 The Elec
