Abstract
The paper analyzes the conditions for the onset of a localization band in a thermo-elastoplastic solid subjected to adiabatic conditions, while restri cting the analysis to the geometrically linear theory. A salient feature of the analysis is the concept of a regularized displacement discontinuity, w hich is acompanied by a temperature discontinuity across the band. Closed-f orm solutions for the critical direction of the band and the corresponding critical are obtained for a large class of models featuring isotropic elast ic, plastic and thermal properties, undergoing deformations under plane str ess. Explicit results are given for the von Mises yield criterion with ther mal elastic expansion and thermal plastic softening for realistic material data pertinent to stainless steel.
