The current experimental data on the solar-neutrino problem are review
ed. The possibilities offered by the radiochemical lithium detector fo
r solving this problem, in particular, for determining the contributio
n of medium-energy and boron neutrinos in chlorine and gallium detecto
rs, are discussed. A brief description is given of the prototype of th
e lithium detector containing a target of 300 kg of metallic lithium,
which is presently under construction at the Nuclear Research Institut
e of the Russian Academy of Sciences. (C) 1997 American Institute of P
hysics.
