The design and the operation of the LASMA instrument combining laser ablati
on with time-of-flight mass analysis is briefly described. The application
to the analysis of multielement metal samples and non-conducting powder mix
tures of known composition reveals the LASMA technique to be a semi-quantit
ative method for elemental bulk analysis with a detection limit around 50 m
u g/g in a mass range up to 250 amu.
