This paper presents a new method based on the optimization method for tunin
g the parameters of the Power System Stabilizers (PSS) to enhance small-sig
nal stability. A general-purpose nonlinear programming package is used to m
inimize the real part of the dominant eigenvalue in the system without impl
ementing the eigensensitivities. The basic control theory and the root-coef
ficient relationship for polynomial equations are incorporated for obtainin
g the equality constraints. The PSS parameters bound in a set are formulate
d as the inequality constraints. A comparative result for a small-signal st
ability problem validates the applicability of the proposed method.
