An NSF project, Combined Research and Curriculum Development for Power Pla:
nt Intelligent Distributed Control, was conducted from 1992 to 1996, and ex
panded to Power System Intelligent Coordinated Control project. Two new gra
duate courses were developed for power plant control. The capstone Power Pl
ant Intelligent Distributed Control course covers: 1) real-time large scale
power plant simulations using UNIX network programming, 2) distributed imp
lementation of advanced controls in an architecture of workstations and mic
roprocessor-based controllers, and 3) intelligent controls using fuzzy logi
c, neural network, and genetic algorithm. Along with the curriculum develop
ment update, a summary of significant research activities is presented in o
rder to provide a complete overview of the results of the projects.
