A simple, selective and efficient liquid membrane system for the transport
of Zn2+ ion has been designed. In this system, potassium-dibenzo-18-crown-6
is used as a carrier for the uphill transport of zinc as Zn(SCN)(4)(2-) co
mplex ion through a chloroform membrane, using cysteine as a suitable strip
ping agent in the aqueous receiving phase. Under the optimal experimental c
onditions, the amount of zinc transported through the liquid membrane after
90 min is found to be 97 +/- 1 percent. The selectivity and efficiency of
zinc transported from aqueous,solutions containing Ag+, Sr2+, Mn2+, Co2+, N
i2+ Cu2+, Cd2+, Pb2+, Hg2+, Pd2+, Fe3+, Bi3+ and Cr3+ ions have been studie
