The effect of an external stress on the barrier properties of natural, brom
obutyl, and nitrile rubber were studied using a modified ASTM permeation me
thod. Stress-induced changes such as a decrease in the breakthrough time wi
th mechanical elongation was observed. Upon application of a small mechanic
al deformation, little change was observed in terms of steady-state permeat
ion Aux. On the other hand, a stress-enhanced diffusion was observed for mo
st of the solvent/rubber pairs studied. (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
