P. Howell et C. Bonnett, SPEAKING CLEARLY FOR THE HEARING-IMPAIRED - INTELLIGIBILITY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN CLEAR AND LESS CLEAR SPEAKERS, European journal of disorders of communication, 32(1), 1997, pp. 89-97
The clarity of the speech of 12 speakers was assessed by intelligibili
ty tests with hearing impaired subjects and from self-ratings about th
e speaker's ability to communicate with such listeners. The results of
these tests correlate positively. Self-ratings account for approximat
ely 60% of the variance. Thus self-ratings can be used as a convenient
practical way of establishing an individual speaker's clarity.
