Abstract
We investigate the mechanism of steady-state light amplification without po pulation inversion in a trapped four-level atomic system. With analytical a nd numerical analyses, we provide insight into the origin of the gain and d erive the conditions under which the system exhibits gain without populatio n inversion in any state basis. These theoretical results can be used to ch oose the appropriate atomic system for exhibiting amplification without pop ulation inversion.
