The growth of the shells of C-60 crystals was carried out under variou
s conditions. The detailed structures of the grown shells were investi
gated by transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The
shells were formed during thermal sublimation of the C-60 crystals, wh
ich were irradiated with white light in air, The shells were mainly co
mposed of a kind of amorphous carbon. From these results, it is sugges
ted that the oxygen-induced disintegration of C-60 cages is responsibl
e for the shell formation.
