Materials research in China: The role of the NSFC

The National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) is a national organ ization that supports both basic and applied research in science and engine ering. Established in 1986, the NSFC has become the major source of funds f or researchers in universities and research institutes. The author, a Divis ion Director in the Department of Engineering and Materials of the NSFC, de scribes the structure and programs of the NSFC in the area of materials, in cluding General, Major, and Key Projects; the level and distribution of fun ding; and Key Laboratories.
