Twenty-two fish species associated with bedrock and gravel were sampled in
the subtidal zone of Port Daniel Bay in the Bale des Chaleurs, Gulf of St.
Lawrence. These substrata supported different flora and invertebrates. Alth
ough different numbers of fish within species were collected over the two s
ubstrata, species diversity measured as species richness and heterogeneity
of species, and the number and quantity of prey items in stomach contents w
ere similar. Therefore, a single fish community appeared to occur in the su
btidal zone. The logarithmic series described the species heterogeneity, su
ggesting a mature community. Most fishes preyed on echinoderms, in contrast
to studies further south, when the same species primarily preyed on crusta
ceans.
