Om. Hanniffy et al., Chemical structure of a polysaccharide from Campylobacter jejuni 176.83 (serotype O : 41) containing only furanose sugars, CARBOHY RES, 319(1-4), 1999, pp. 124-132
A neutral polysaccharide was obtained by hot phenol-water extraction of bio
mass from Campylobacter jejuni 176.83 and subsequently separated from acid-
liberated core oligosaccharide of lipopolysaccharide by sequential GPC on B
io-Gel P6 and TSK-40 columns. All sugar components of the trisaccharide rep
eating unit of the polysaccharide were found to be of the furanose ring for
m. The major trisaccharide contained B-L-arabinose, 6-deoxy-P-D-altro-hepto
se (beta-Ddd-altHep) and 6-deoxy-beta-L-altrose (beta-L-6d-Alt), whereas in
the minor trisaccharide the beta-L-6d-Alt is replaced by its C-5 epimer al
pha-D-Fuc. On the basis of H-1 and C-13 NMR spectroscopic studies, includin
g 2D ROESY, HMQC and HMQC-TOCSY experiments, the following structures of th
e repeating units were established:
-->2)-beta-L-Araf-(1 --> 2)-beta-D-6d-altHepf-(1 --> 2)-beta-L-6d-Altf-(1 -
-> (75%) -->2)-beta-L-Araf-(1 --> 2)-beta-D-6d-altHepf-(1 --> 2)-alpha-D-Fu
