Abstract
The milk of a beagle dog (Canis familiaris) was extracted and fractionated to yield, inter alia, beta-D-Galp 3S-(1 --> 4)-D-Glc (lactose 3'-sulfate), which does not appear to have previously been isolated from milk or other n atural sources. The structure was established by 2D NMR spectroscopy and ma ss spectrometry. By contrast with the milk of some closely related Carnivor a, the major constituent of the dog milk was lactose, with minor amounts of 2'-fucosyllactose and sialyl oligosaccharides.
