Abstract
A system of magnetic field goniometry was developed for measuring the frequ ency of stomach contractions. This technique uses a handheld, electronic co mpass to measure the angular change in direction of a magnetic field genera ted by a small, ingested magnet. Measurements of gastric mechanical activit y made by goniometry were validated with simultaneous measurements using ma nometry and electrogastrography. The agreement between these different moda lities was excellent. In this pilot study, magnetic field goniometry provid ed an easy, minimally invasive, and accurate method to measure the frequenc y of gastric contractions.
