This paper discusses projections of emerging geographic areas of concern wi
th regard to forest and rangeland condition, as indicated by a model based
on a set of independent econometric production functions tor condition indi
cators at the national scale. These production functions reflect two specia
l characteristics: (1) the independence of ecological systems from human co
ntrol, and (2) the broad scale spatial nature of environmental and ecologic
al processes. The emphasis in this paper is the model projections themselve
s, which are presented and discussed using national-scale maps.
