Abstract
Gas chromatographic and mass spectrometric data on eight known pyridine-3-c arboxylate alkaloids of betel nut (Areca catechu) have been standardised an d applied to the characterisation of a further 16 basic compounds extracted in low concentrations. Nine groups of compounds have been recognised and h omologues allocated to these groups on the evidence derived from their elec tron ionisation mass spectra and gas chromatographic retention times.
