Continuous monitoring of physico-chemical parameters enable the determinati
on of water quality in lakes of the English Lake District, where nutrient e
nrichment needs to be managed. In the case of Elterwater, severe deteriorat
ion of water quality has resulted in the prolonged deoxygenation of the who
le water column of the inner basin. More specifically, the phytoplankton di
ffered between the three basins, with progressive increases in biomass and
species indicative of eutrophy, between the oligotrophic outer to the hyper
trophic inner basins. Remedial action is proposed for this lake, with conti
nual monitoring of recovery.
