Abstract
The development of a national scheme for the standing waters of Scotland is
described. It classifies waters along three gradients - phosphorus, loss o
f acid neutralising capacity and degree of contamination with toxic suubsta
nces. A series of case studies provide examples of the application of the c
lassification in lake management.
