Abstract
The inoculation of gray iron has long been studied. The effect of inoculant is regarded as the graphitizer in eutectic transformation, which provide t he nuclei for gamma-graphite eutectic and eliminate undercooled graphite an d chilled white structure. In conventional gray iron, primary dendrite form s during solidification. There is still no reference on the effect of inocu lation on the formation of primary dendrite. The aim of this study is to cl arify the influence of inoculation on the dendrite formation. Results show that the tensile strength of gray iron is strongly effected by the characte ristics of dendrite, other than graphitization, inoculation also shows stro ng effect on the formation of dendrite which is the leading factor in impro ving the tensile strength of gray iron. There is no correlation between gra phitizing effect and the effect on tensile strength of gray iron, For fully understanding the effect of inoculation on gray iron. the effect of which on dendrite formation should be considered.
