On the basis of the new method of integral inequalities, some general probl
ems of impact dynamics are considered. Through this method a priori approxi
mate upper (lower) estimates for locally non-linear highly dynamic problems
of the theory of elasticity may be obtained. By using these estimates the
locally nonlinear problems may be formally reduced to the variational probl
em. Some examples are considered. Areas of effective applications of the me
thod of integral inequalities to impact dynamics problems are studied. The
problem of a normal perforation of thin plates by a rigid cylindrical impac
tor in the intermediate diapason of collision velocities is considered in d
etail. A Reasonable correlation between theoretical and experimental data i
s observed. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
