The synthesis and spectroscopic characterization of four manganese(III
) porphyrin thiolates are reported. The investigated compounds are rep
resented by (TPP)Mn(SR), where TPP is the dianion of tetraphenylporhyr
in and R is C6H5, C6H4(p-NO2), Et2NCS and C4H8NCS. Each complex was ch
aracterized by UV-vis and H-1 NMR spectroscopy. The effects of axial l
igands on the UV-vis spectra of synthesized manganese porphyrin comple
xes is discussed and proton isotropic shifts are shown to be predomina
ntly contact in origin, reflecting extensive porphyrin-to-metal pi bon
