[Me3PtF](4) can be prepared from the action of AgF on [Me3PtI](4). In the p
resence of moisture it hydrolyses to give progressively [(Me3PtF)(3)(Me3PtO
H)], [(Me3PtF)(2)(Me3PtOH)(2)], [(Me3PtF)(Me3PtOH)(3)] and [Me3PtOH](4). Va
riable temperature NMR spectroscopy of these partially hydrolysed tetra-pla
tinum fluorides shows that at higher temperatures the methyl groups within
each Me3Pt unit rapidly exchange sites by an intramolecular mechanism, but
the cubic Pt4X4 cages retain their integrity. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A
