Abstract
Theoretical results are presented for finite samples of smectic A liquid cr ystals subjected to both a uniform pressure and a magnetic field applied pe rpendicular to the smectic layers. A uniform pressure with no field present is also considered. Criteria for suitable boundary conditions are given fo r planar sample geometries. 'Grid-like' smectic layer undulations are shown to arise as solutions to the governing equilibrium equation.
