The results of the study of the solvent nature influence on the kineti
c peculiarities of the free-radical polymerization for water-soluble m
onomers have been summarized. The dramatic change in the rate of proce
ss for the polymerization of such monomers has been noted while using
water solutions instead of organic solvents. Comparative analysis of t
he kinetic data and the results of spectroscopics, as well as viscosim
etric, investigations, allowed one to propose polymerization mechanism
for water-soluble monomers in different solvents. The distinctive fea
ture of water-soluble monomers polymerization is hydrophobic interacti
on, which takes place in water solutions of polymers and results in sh
arp differense between kinetic parameters for such monomers polymeriza
tion in water and organic solvents.
