Antiprotonic deuterium K-alpha X-rays were seen for the first time. Their a
nalysis resulted in spin-averaged 1s strong interaction parameters, namely
- 1050 +/- 250 eV (repulsive) for the Is shift and 1100 +/- 750 eV for the
Is width. The large errors are mainly due to low statistics, In addition, v
alues for the K-alpha/L-alpha and L-total/L-alpha yields at low pressure (2
0 mbar) were obtained: 0.005 +/- 0.003 and 1.34 +/- 0.05. Furthermore, a 2p
mean absorption width of 80 less than or equal to Gamma(2p) less than or e
qual to 350 meV was deduced. The results for the Is ground state are somewh
at surprising. especially the narrow 1s width which is similar to the spin-
averaged antiprotonic hydrogen Is width. However, our 1s width is in agreem
ent with low-energy scattering data [A. Zenoni et al., Phys. Lett. B 461 (1
999) 413] (see preceding paper). (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights
