The radiation chemical reactions of zinc was investigated by pulse radiolys
is technique. The rate constant k(e(aq)(-) + Zn(II)) was evaluated for seve
ral forms of Zn(II). The value of epsilon(300) nm(Zn+) was determined as (1
1,500 +/- 500) dm(3) mol(-1) cm(-1). The rate constants of several Zn+ reac
tions were evaluated. The standard redox potentials (vs SHE) are estimated
as following: -2.87 V < E-0(Zn2+/Zn+) < -2.31 V and E-0(Zn3+/Zn2+) > + 2.72
V. It is concluded that the zinc injection would have no negative effect o
n the radiolysis of the coolant in the light water nuclear reactors. (C) 19
