This project is a continuation of the experiments with VOCs electron beam t
reatment (Honkonen et al., 1997. Proc Int. Symp. on Radiation Technology fo
r Conservation of the Environment, Zakopane, Poland, September, 1997). Expe
rimental results of electron beam treatment of gaseous styrene under atmosp
heric pressure are presented in the paper. Two irradiation doses of 10 and
20 kGy were applied. Analyses of irradiation products were performed with a
gas chromatography-mass spectrometer. The results showed that main product
s produced by irradiation were benzaldehyde and phenol. We observed those c
ompounds both in the gas and solid/liquid phase. The removal efficiency of
styrene front the gas phase ranges from 83 to 95%. In this work we focused
on organic products of irradiated styrene. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. A
