We report a scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) study of formic acid a
dsorption on clean Cu(110) at 300 K. An ordered structure was observed
consisting of short rows parallel to the [110] direction, with an int
er-row spacing in the [001] direction of two lattice spacings of the u
nreconstructed (1 X 1)-Cu(110) termination. Adjacent domains of this s
tructure were offset in the [001] direction by one lattice spacing giv
ing relatively short-range order in the [110] direction. A structure i
s proposed to account for the observed STM images.
