Abstract
We have investigated the termination of epitaxial alpha-Fe2O3(0001) prepare d by oxygen-plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy as grown. The sample was stabilized down to near room temperature in the oxygen plasma after growth . The resulting surface is Fe-terminated, despite the highly oxidizing cond itions used to end the growth. This result shows that the Fe termination is the most stable surface structure to form, consistent with the predictions of the surface autocompensation model. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V.
