Abstract
The Centre for Underground Construction (COB), was established by the Dutch government in 1994 as a reseearch institution. As the programme got underw ay, new projects were introduced and the emphasis shifted from purely techn ology-related issues to more general topics associated with the use of unde rground space. COB's objective for the coming years is not to concentrate s olely on, tunnelling in, soft soils, bat rather to expand the experience ga ined and to further promote underground construction on a larger scale.
