Abstract
Two pilot projects for bored tunnelling in soft soil have been undertaken i n the Netherlands. The monitoring was commissioned under the authority of t he Centre for Underground Construction (COB). The research related to the S econd Heinenoord Tunnel and the Botlek Rail Tunnel is described. Boring wor ks for the Second Heinenoord Tunnel have been completed, while the boring o f the Botlek Rail Tunnel began in spring of 1999. Experience from the first project will be put into use for the development of the latter. Both monit oring schemes have three logical phases: predictions, measuring and evaluat ion. An overview of all instrumentation and a selection of the results of t he Second Heinenoord tunnel is given. (C) 1999 Published by Elsevier Scienc e Ltd. All rights reserved.
